At IL AHEC, we’re dedicated to supporting the healthcare workforce at every stage. From sparking curiosity in young students to guiding college students on their career paths and helping professionals grow in their fields, we provide the tools, resources, and experiences needed to succeed in the ever-evolving healthcare industry. Our regional centers collaborate with universities and healthcare organizations across Illinois to improve the supply, distribution, and quality of healthcare professionals, with a strong focus on underserved communities.
Early exposure
We inspire elementary and high school students by providing them with opportunities to explore healthcare careers through:
- Observing healthcare professionals in action
- Exposure to various health career paths
- Interactive simulations, facility tours, and classroom presentations
These early experiences lay the foundation for a rewarding career, particularly in underserved communities that need healthcare professionals the most.
Undergraduate Education
We help college students navigate their healthcare career journey with:
- The AHEC Scholars Program
- Personalized career counseling and mentorship
- Field placements in underserved rural and urban communities
Undergraduate years are crucial for preparing for clinical careers. We focus on key fields like primary care, dentistry, psychiatry, and physical therapy, ensuring students are well-equipped to meet the healthcare needs of Illinois’ underserved areas.
Graduate & Professional Development
We offer graduate students and healthcare professionals the resources they need to grow with:
- Transition-to-practice support for new graduates
- Skill-building workshops and ongoing professional development
- Access to continuing education opportunities
Our specialized programs, such as the Rural Medical Education and Urban Medicine Programs, provide unmatched opportunities for individuals pursuing careers in areas with critical healthcare needs. We also maintain a public health perspective, offering programs to address population health challenges.
serving the community
Our programs support a broad range of individuals, including community health workers, job seekers, school personnel, and employers. By partnering with healthcare organizations across the state, we help nurture a new generation of healthcare professionals while addressing the pressing healthcare needs of Illinois communities.
