Why Jesenia Chose Healthcare
Jesenia chose a career in healthcare because she values helping others, something she gets from her mom, who taught her to help people in need. Jesenia and her mom have volunteered together often since she was in middle school, or donated clothes to the Salvation Army. She strongly believes the world needs good people willing to help others.
What She Values Most About AHEC Scholars
Jesenia has enjoyed getting to know the other Scholars in the program, who she believes are incredibly hard-working and kind-hearted. Jesenia also recently participated in the Illinois AHEC’s first ever Mental Health First Aid training for AHEC Scholars and received her MHFA Certification! In addition, Jesenia has participated in other AHEC-based activities, such as the AHEC Scholars book club, the Community Partner Walk, and volunteering with Midwest Food Bank in Normal, IL.
Career Goals
Jesenia’s career goals include pursuing a master’s degree in public health after she graduates this spring. She is also interested in participating in community organization to further her desires to help those in need. Additionally, she hopes to secure a public health-related position, such as a health educator, after completing her education.
Advice for Future AHEC Scholars
Jesenia encourages future Scholars to prioritize self-care:
“My advice for future Scholars is to put yourself first. While attending university, we tend to forget about ourselves. Take time for yourself and do self care. Do things that make you happy. Spend time with people that make you happy. Put yourself first always.”
