Thinking about a Health Care Career? A Dozen Bits of Advice for You

A health care career can be incredibly rewarding, says Rafael Corona, the new director of East Central AHEC, “but it also demands dedication, empathy, and a strong work ethic.” Here are some pieces of advice that Rafael would give students considering a health care career:

  1. Passion and Commitment: Health care professions require genuine passion for helping others. Ensure that your desire to pursue this career is based on a genuine interest in making a difference in people’s lives.
  2. Educational Preparation: Focus on your education. Choose a relevant major in sciences or health, and maintain a strong academic record. Further education and continuous learning are often necessary in the health care field due to advancements in medical technologies and treatments.
  3. Gaining Experience: Seek out internships, volunteer opportunities, or part-time jobs in health care settings. Practical experience not only looks great on your resume but it also gives you a real understanding of the day-to-day realities of the profession.
  4. Developing Soft Skills: Health care professionals need excellent communication, empathy, and teamwork skills. Work on developing your ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  5. Time Management: Health care careers can be demanding. Develop strong time management skills to balance your academic commitments, clinical experiences, and personal life.
  6. Staying Informed: Stay updated on current health issues, policies, and advancements in medical research. Being knowledgeable about the industry shows your dedication and interest in the field.
  7. Emotional Resilience: Health care professionals often deal with emotionally charged situations. Developing emotional resilience is crucial to cope with the challenges you may face.
  8. Networking: Build a professional network early. Connect with professors, health care professionals, and alumni. Networking can provide valuable insights, mentorship, and potential job opportunities.
  9. Exploring Specializations: Health care is a vast field with numerous specializations. Take the time to explore various areas like nursing, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physical therapy, etc., to find the one that aligns best with your interests and skills.
  10. Ethical Considerations: Understand the ethical responsibilities associated with health care. Patient confidentiality, empathy, and respect for diverse beliefs and cultures are fundamental principles.
  11. Preparing for Challenges: Health care professions can be mentally and emotionally challenging. Be prepared for setbacks, and develop a support system to help you navigate through difficult times.
  12. Continued Professional Development: Once you enter the health care field, continue your education and professional development. This might involve certifications, workshops, or further degrees to enhance your skills and stay current with advancements in your field.

Remember, says Rafael, “a health care career is not just a job; it’s a calling. It requires a deep sense of purpose and a genuine desire to improve the lives of others.”
