RMED Alum Embodies the ‘Real Impact’ of Rural Medicine Training

RMED alum Dr. Kelsey Hopkins found the 16-week preceptorship the last year of the program to be one of the one of the most impactful parts of medical school. Now a physician in Greenville, Illinois, he is at the center of a recent article.

After graduating from UIC’s Rural Medical Education (RMED) in 2007 and a residency in Terre Haute, Indiana, Dr. Hopkins found “the right fit for his training” at a practice in Greenville, that “had been searching for another physician for more than five years, highlighting the reality of the shortage.” He and a partner have since opened Greenville Family Medicine.

Dr. Hopkins now serves as an assistant clinical professor at the College of Medicine in Rockford and provides the fourth-year 16-week rural preceptorship experience that meant so much to him.

The article, “Real Impact: Rural doctor and his region thrive because of unique training,” appeared on October 30 in the University of Illinois System News, published by the Office of External Relations and Communications.
