Project Brotherhood at 2019 APHA

2019 marked Project Brotherhood’s 22nd year in attendance at The American Public Health Association’s Annual Meeting and Expo in Philadelphia Pennsylvania November 2-6, 2019. This year’s theme was “Creating the Healthiest Nation: For Science. For Action. For Health.

Project Brotherhood staff and advisory board members have annually presented on various public health topics exemplifying our commitment to the years’ theme.

One highlighted presentation entitled “Doing good in Da Hood: How Racism effects research and how a Citizen Scientist Program can fight racism”, has received much acclaim. The session, in collaboration with PB partners, explored the historical roots of racism and health research in the United States. In addition to an historical overview of how research and racism have been intertwined; the presentation discussed challenges facing researchers. The success of the Citizen Scientist, a research program pioneered through a collaboration between Project Brotherhood and UIC to lessen the challenges faced when community partners work with an academic medical center, was also explored.

This year, we were able to sponsor seven health professional students to attend the APHA Annual meeting which is the nation’s preeminent public health conference. Just a few examples of the students’ participation include presenting a poster session, another moderated a conference session and another joined the Black Caucus of Health workers.
