The first full week of April is observed as a time to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving the health of our nation.
National Public Health Week is an initiative of the American Public Health Association (APHA).
The theme for 2023 is “Centering and Celebrating Cultures in Health.” The APHA writes:
Our cultures have always shaped our health. We learn from the communities we’re born in and that we build together. For this NPHW, we look to community leaders as our health leaders. We celebrate the unique and joyful ways different cultures focus on health. And we look to how we can learn from each other, with humility and openness.
Each day of National Public Health Week is focus on a particular public health topic. Monday’s theme is “Community.” See all the daily topics with topical facts and information for science, action, health and celebration on the NPHW themes and facts page. The page also has links to still-relevant NPHW themes and fact sheets for recent years.
The first National Public Health Week took place in 1995 and has seen increasing support over the years. The APHA creates new NPHW materials each year that can be used during and after the week to raise awareness about public health and prevention.
