The National Center for Rural Health Professions is hiring counselors for the 2023 Rural Health Careers Camp.
The camp is designed for high school students interested in becoming a health professional. During this three-day overnight program, campers participate in hands-on learning activities and labs that represent various healthcare careers. The camp also gives high school students an opportunity to meet college students and working health professionals.
Applications are open for two positions: camp counselor and camp counselor leader.
The camp counselor assists in the day-to-day operations of the camp. Most importantly, their role is to ensure the care and well-being of the campers. Camp counselors need to assist campers in new situations, give encouragement, and care about each camper as an individual. They are expected to guide campers, provide a safe environment, and model positive personal life skills and values such as fairness, caring, good citizenship, trustworthiness, respect, and responsibility.
The camp counselor leader assumes the same responsibilities as well as additional responsibilities prior to, during, and after the program.
To qualify, applicants must have completed their sophomore year of undergraduate studies in pursuit of a health-related profession. Preference will be given to applicants with previous mentoring experience as well as to students with rural backgrounds.
The 2023 camp schedule runs from Sunday afternoon, June 25, through Wednesday, June 28. Counselors and counselor leaders are required to reside at the camp location in the assigned rooms and participate in all scheduled activities.
Camp counselors receive a stipend of $800; camp counselor leaders receive a stipend of $1,200.
