Four students from the Urban Medicine program rewrote an American Medical Association resolution and got it passed at the Association’s recent meeting. Jessie Klugman, Soobin Kim, Alex Kenefake, and Maya McKeown collaborated to rework the resolution to better support students nationally who are living with sickle cell disease (SCD). Hidden In Plain Sight Room

The South Central IL Area Health Education Center, hosted by SSM Health, has partnered with the Community Resource Center and the Marion County Coalition Against Drug Use to offer a mobile Hidden In Plain Sight room. This room offers a hands-on, interactive display of a bedroom which has hidden clues to drug use, including paraphernalia, signage, and shows how difficult some hiding places are for parents, guardians, or loved ones to find when they have a drug user in their home. The Opioid Crisis: What Rural Communities Should Know

East Central Illinois AHEC, Gibson Area Hospital & Health Services and the Ford County Public Health Department collaborated to hold a 1 day educational event on 8/14/19 entitled “The Opioid Crisis: What Rural Communities Should know.” This program was intended to educate healthcare professionals, first responders, and the general public about what opioids are, understanding drug use and addiction, the treatments available, responding to an overdose and addressing the stigma of opioid use disorder. E-cigarette Illness Outbreak Prompts CDC Interim Guidance

Over the past several weeks, many news outlets have been reporting serious pulmonary illnesses associated with e-cigarettes, commonly referred to as vaping. Illness has been reported in a variety of  locales by clinical sites and health departments; at this time, data from 25 states is available. On September 6, 2019, the New England Journal of Medicine highlighted the situation in Illinois and Wisconsin. In a detailed report using data from the Centers for Disease and Prevention, the Illinois Department of Public Health, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, the authors identified 53 individuals, 50 of whom received in-patient treatment, as part of a pulmonary disease cluster.
