Soggy weather couldn’t ruin RMED’s annual “No Harm On The Farm” outing on Friday, October 13, at Scheidairy Farms and Baker’s Acres with Stateline Farm Rescue.
The event started with a delicious lunch on campus catered by Jason’s Deli, where Michelle Rathman and Selena King from Midwest Dairy Association talked about supporting rural health professionals who serve pediatric populations.
Then, the group boarded the bus to head out for a tour of Scheidairy Farms, view their milk parlor, and learn more about typical characteristics of farmers and what specific ailments to keep in mind and look out for when treating rural patients in the future. They then traveled to Baker’s Acres for a hands-on experience with a grain bin rescue simulation, a field safety demonstration from a flight nurse, and even got to climb into a grain bin to get a feel for the massive size of the structures where an accident could happen.
Event organizers are sending a big thank you to the Illinois Farm Bureau for making the entire afternoon happen and for sponsoring the grain bin simulation. They are also grateful Doug Scheider and family for inviting us them to their farm and allowing the meet-and-greet with hundreds of their cows year after year. And last but not least, a big thank you to Mark Baker and everyone at Baker’s Acres who were so kind to host such an informative hands-on session.
The day was an experience these students will remember forever!
