The UIC College of Nursing is hosting a webinar, The Black Angels: The Untold Story of the Nurses Who Helped Cure Tuberculosis, presented by Maria Smilos.
The Black Angels was a group of young nurses who cared for tuberculosis patients at the notorious Sea View Sanatorium in the New York City public hospital system. These nurses were recruited from southern states, lured by promises of good pay, a career and an escape for Jim Crow policies.
The webinar chronicles the conditions under which TB patients were cared for during the 1930s and 1940s and documents some sobering parallels to the well-known Tuskegee Syphilis Study
Maria Smilos is a recognized editor of biomedical books. She has also written for The Guardian, American Nurse, Narratively, The Rumpus, Dame Magazine, and The Forward, among others publications. The Black Angels is her first book.
