SIU Pathways to Saluki Medicine Camp, a 5-day overnight medical-based summer camp designed for high school students interested in the health care field or biomedical science, proved popular with campers.
Slots for the camp, which started June 4th, filled up quickly, and there was a waitlist with more than 25 students.
The camp provides a way to learn while getting to experience the college-like atmosphere. Students get to tour SIU’s cadaver anatomy lab, get CPR trained, and learn about different careers in health care and the paths to achieve them.
Activities included doing a glucose assay, where campers learned to pipette and use the spectrophotometer to measure glucose levels and determine if their patients were diabetic.
In a medical-themed breakout-box activity contributed by South Central AHEC, the students had to crack the code to break out.
The summer camp hosted by the Physiology Department at SIUC, with support from South Central AHEC.
